South Korea has achieved the world’s second-largest current account surplus among major economies for the second quarter, according to data from the International Monetary Fund as cited by the Bank of Korea. President Lee Jae Myung announced that the country recorded a surplus of US$116.63 billion between April and June, trailing only China, which achieved a surplus of US$193.72 billion.

President Lee emphasized that South Korea is enhancing its position in the global economic arena, moving beyond its historical role of following advanced economies. The country’s surplus surpassed the combined figures of Germany and Japan, underlining its growing economic influence.

Key to this success is the international performance of South Korean companies, particularly in the semiconductor sector, which is integral to the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies. President Lee noted the importance of this industry in the country’s economic achievements.

Looking ahead, President Lee called for strategies to further strengthen South Korea’s industrial competitiveness and to increase its potential economic growth rate. These efforts, he suggested, will help solidify the country’s contribution to shaping the global economic landscape.
