South Korea: Trump to Prioritize North Korea Post-Iran Deal Completion

During a meeting at the G7 summit in France, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to shift his attention to North Korea after finalizing an agreement with Iran. According to Lee, Trump signaled that the time had come to prioritize addressing the North Korean issue. Lee also pointed out that the sanctions against Pyongyang, imposed due to its nuclear weapons program, have been losing their effectiveness.

Lee highlighted that North Korea’s increasing military cooperation with Russia, especially in the context of the Ukraine conflict, has weakened the impact of international sanctions. He emphasized that even limited support from Russia has provided meaningful assistance to North Korea, undermining the pressure that the sanctions were intended to exert.

Speculation about a potential revival of diplomatic efforts with North Korea has grown, following Trump’s release of a photograph with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This picture brought back memories of their historic 2018 summit in Singapore, which was a landmark moment in U.S.-North Korea relations.

The issue of North Korea remains a significant security challenge in East Asia, primarily due to its ongoing nuclear weapons program. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts over the years, the Korean Peninsula remains technically at war, as the Korean War of 1950-53 concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty.
