Ukraine launched a significant drone attack targeting Moscow and its surrounding areas, coinciding with the closing day of Russia’s parliamentary elections. According to Russian authorities, the assault resulted in at least three deaths and inflicted damage on an oil refinery.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that since Saturday, over 1,600 drones have been intercepted, with around 450 directed toward the capital. Several drones managed to reach the Moscow Oil Refinery, causing damage; a residential building in the Moscow region was also struck, necessitating the evacuation of approximately 400 residents from a 21-story apartment building.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the drone strikes aimed at critical Russian energy and logistics infrastructure. Ukraine has increasingly utilized long-range drones and domestically produced weapons to reach strategic targets deep within Russia, primarily focusing on energy facilities.
This attack occurred as Russia wrapped up its first parliamentary election since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian officials accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the electoral process, while Kyiv continues its strategic campaign against Russian military and energy installations.
