US Ends Russian Oil Waiver, Sparks Worry Over India’s Energy Security

by admin477351

The United States may soon end a temporary waiver that has permitted several countries, including India, to continue purchasing Russian oil. This development comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the waiver, initially introduced in March to mitigate disruptions in global energy markets caused by tensions in the Middle East, is under review. The waiver has already seen two extensions and is currently set to expire on June 17.

In his remarks before a congressional committee, Rubio emphasized that the waiver was always intended as a temporary solution to stabilize global oil supplies. He reiterated that the US’s overarching policy remains committed to imposing sanctions on Russian energy exports. While the decision on whether to extend or end the waiver ultimately lies with the Treasury Department, Rubio expressed a preference for concluding the waiver as soon as conditions permit.

The potential cessation of this waiver could have significant implications for India, a country that resumed purchasing Russian crude oil after disruptions in energy supplies from the Gulf region. These disruptions were due to regional conflicts and shipping issues around the Strait of Hormuz. Russian oil remains an attractive option for India due to its competitive pricing and availability, making it a vital source of crude.

The US has been urging India to diversify its energy imports and lessen its reliance on Russian oil. Recent dialogues between Washington and New Delhi have touched on commitments related to energy sourcing, as part of broader discussions on trade and economic cooperation.

If the waiver is not extended past the June 17 deadline, India may face the necessity of increasing imports from alternative suppliers. This shift could lead to higher energy costs and necessitate adjustments in India’s crude procurement strategy.
