South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged a comprehensive investigation into a mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that injured three South Korean soldiers. Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, President Lee emphasized the need for a swift and transparent inquiry, involving cooperation with the United Nations Command, to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
The explosion occurred on September 21 while soldiers were clearing a route in the western sector of the DMZ in preparation for a planned joint inspection. Preliminary evidence suggests that North Korean land mines were likely responsible for the blast, according to South Korea’s military. A joint investigation by South Korean and UN Command personnel is currently underway to verify these findings.
President Lee expressed his concerns for the injured soldiers and their families, stressing the importance of preventing the spread of unverified claims while the investigation is ongoing. He reiterated that any necessary measures would be taken based on the final findings of the investigation.
Additionally, President Lee highlighted the significance of enhancing South Korea’s defense capabilities, including the development of advanced military technologies, to ensure national security.
The ongoing investigation aims to determine the origin of the mines and provide clarity on the circumstances leading to the explosion. South Korean authorities have indicated that appropriate actions will be considered if North Korean responsibility is confirmed.
