Korea Secures Four Medals in Asian Games Basketball Amid Domestic Challenges

by admin477351

Korean basketball has made a remarkable impact at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, securing medals across all categories in both men’s and women’s competitions. This achievement marks a significant boost for a sport that has faced challenges domestically, including declining popularity and hurdles in talent development.

The men’s 5×5 basketball team broke a 12-year title drought by defeating Japan 67-57 in the final, while the men’s 3×3 team achieved Korea’s first gold in this discipline by overcoming Qatar 19-10. The women’s teams also contributed to the medal tally; the women’s 3×3 team earned a bronze medal with a win against Thailand 21-8, marking their first Asian Games medal in this event. The women’s 5×5 team reached the finals after a hard-fought victory over China, winning 85-80 in the semifinals.

These successes come amid efforts to rejuvenate the sport within South Korea, which has seen a rise in attendance for the Korean Basketball League, reaching 811,185 spectators during the 2025-26 season. Despite this increase, attendance figures have not yet reached the 1.2 million peak recorded in the 2013-14 season.

One of the key challenges for Korean basketball remains its reliance on a limited pool of school and university players, with only 2,351 registered student-athletes compared to the more extensive basketball system in Japan. However, the recent international exposure and structured preparation, especially for the 3×3 teams, have played a pivotal role in their achievements. Players participated in both domestic tournaments and international competitions leading up to the Asian Games.

Looking ahead, basketball officials and analysts emphasize the need for further investment in player development, international competition, and training infrastructure to sustain progress. The women’s teams, in particular, face difficulties in maintaining adequate numbers for full 5×5 training sessions.
