India is advancing with plans to purchase an additional five S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia, following Moscow’s submission of a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The final approval for this acquisition is anticipated from the Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent on successful price negotiations and clearance from the Finance Ministry. India’s initial agreement, signed in 2018 to acquire five S-400 systems for $5.43 billion, is on track to conclude with the last system’s delivery by November 2026.
This new acquisition is expected to bolster India’s air defence capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector bordering China. The S-400 system demonstrated its strategic value during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, a performance that has significantly influenced India’s consideration of expanding its S-400 arsenal. The decision to proceed with additional systems underscores the importance India places on enhancing its defensive posture in the region.
While the focus has been on the S-400 systems, India has yet to make a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in this offering, especially in light of China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet. This decision remains pending as India weighs its options amidst evolving regional security dynamics.
The potential acquisition of more S-400 systems is likely to be a key topic in broader India-Russia defence discussions. This comes ahead of a scheduled visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September, where defence collaboration between the two nations is expected to be a significant agenda item.
