Peter Cullen, the celebrated Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing life to characters like Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, with family members by his side, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s career began in Canadian television and radio before he became one of the most familiar voices in the world of animation and entertainment. He initially portrayed the iconic Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, in the 1984 Transformers animated series. His portrayal of Prime became a defining element of the character, a role he reprised in seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as in numerous spin-offs.
Cullen also became the voice of Eeyore, the gloomy yet beloved donkey from the Winnie the Pooh stories. His work as Eeyore spanned several television shows, films, and video games, beginning with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Among his other notable contributions to voice acting, Cullen voiced KARR, the antagonist to KITT, in the Knight Rider series, and provided the menacing clicks of the creature in the 1987 film Predator. In addition, he lent his voice to King Kong in the 1976 remake of the classic film.
The actor credited his older brother Larry, a former captain in the US Marine Corps, with influencing the development of Optimus Prime’s character. Larry encouraged Cullen to embody a heroic persona for Prime, one that emphasized strength without aggression, a portrayal that resonated with audiences worldwide.
Over the years, Cullen’s work earned him significant accolades, including a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his portrayal of Optimus Prime. In recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. Cullen’s voice work throughout his career helped shape some of the most enduring characters in animated and science fiction lore, ensuring his legacy in popular culture remains strong.
