The role will focus on collaboration with local businesses, public institutions, and technology partners to strengthen Google Maps’ presence in the region.
Currently, Google Maps in South Korea offers features such as place listings, reviews, and public transit information. However, it lacks the turn-by-turn driving or walking navigation that is available in many other countries. With the planned expansion, Google Maps aims to compete more directly with popular local mapping services like Naver Map and Kakao Map, which already provide similar navigation features.
The South Korean government’s approval in February for Google to export high-precision map data was a significant step forward, overcoming previous rejections due to national security concerns.
