Announced on Truth Social by Trump, the ceasefire is set to take place from May 9 to May 11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, and involves each side exchanging 1,000 prisoners.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the agreement through a post on X, highlighting the humanitarian priority of recovering captured troops over continuing military strikes on Moscow during the Victory Day parade. In his statement, Zelensky emphasized the importance of the exchange over symbolic gestures, remarking, “Red Square is less important to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners who can be brought home.” He also acknowledged the critical role of the U.S. in mediating the negotiations and extended his gratitude to Trump and his team for their efforts.
Meanwhile, Russia’s participation in the ceasefire was confirmed by Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov. The agreement marks the end of a perplexing week of conflicting ceasefire announcements from both nations. Initially, Russia had independently declared a ceasefire from May 8 to May 10 for Victory Day, while Ukraine proposed its own ceasefire for May 5 and 6.
