Russia has unleashed a significant missile and drone attack on Kyiv and nearby areas, marking the third use of its hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This assault has resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left approximately 100 others injured, as reported by Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that the strike specifically targeted Kyiv and the city of Bila Tserkva, inflicting damage on residential buildings, schools, a water facility, government offices, and a large market, while igniting fires across multiple districts.
During the overnight attack, Ukraine reported that Russia deployed nearly 600 drones and 90 missiles, with dozens being ballistic missiles. Although many were intercepted, several managed to hit central Kyiv, causing extensive destruction. Russian authorities confirmed the deployment of the Oreshnik missile alongside other advanced missile systems, asserting that the strikes were aimed at Ukrainian military infrastructure in retaliation for alleged Ukrainian attacks inside Russian-controlled regions.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted that every district of the capital experienced damage, with emergency teams working to rescue individuals trapped in shelters and put out fires caused by the explosions. The assault also impacted Ukraine’s National Art Museum and parts of the foreign ministry building. Ukrainian officials labeled these strikes as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage, drawing strong condemnation from European leaders.
French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the use of the Oreshnik missile, calling it a dangerous escalation, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the action as reckless. European Union officials accused Russia of employing terror tactics against civilians. The Oreshnik missile, introduced by Russia in late 2024, can carry either nuclear or conventional warheads and reportedly travels at hypersonic speed. Although Russian President Vladimir Putin has claimed that the missile is nearly impossible to intercept, some western analysts have expressed skepticism about these claims.
This latest attack follows shortly after President Putin’s warning of retaliation in response to alleged Ukrainian drone strikes in areas under Russian control. The development adds further tension to the already strained situation, as international leaders continue to call for a de-escalation of hostilities.
