The United States has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, as announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This invitation signals a potential shift in diplomatic engagement amidst ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Ukraine.
Scheduled to take place at Trump National Doral, a golf resort in Miami, the summit will gather leaders from major global economies, including the United States, China, and the European Union. Rubio highlighted that the invite offers Putin a platform to engage with President Donald Trump and other world leaders, with Trump open to a direct meeting if it serves a clear diplomatic purpose.
The Kremlin has yet to respond publicly to the invitation. Putin has not participated in an in-person G20 summit since 2019, although he joined virtually in this year’s meeting. His potential attendance could open avenues for direct dialogue amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
Efforts to negotiate an end to this conflict remain a priority for Washington. Recently, Trump engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about possible measures toward a ceasefire, including halting attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy, for his part, has expressed a willingness to meet with Putin if he attends the summit.
This development comes as the Trump administration seeks to enhance diplomatic contacts with Russia, marking a possible change in U.S. strategy concerning the war in Ukraine.
