Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing the cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, following the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which marked 35 years of dialogue relations. The summit, which emphasized ASEAN’s central role, saw Vietnam playing a significant part in its success, according to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung. Vietnam’s efforts were geared towards promoting the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia and advancing cooperation in key areas.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation focused on dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and respect for international law. They proposed expanding collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. The summit concluded with the adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, highlighting energy as a major focus of the partnership.
In a move that further cements its commitment to regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative is aimed at fostering future cooperation among young leaders in the region. On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Vladimir Putin, where both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks centered on expanding collaboration in energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed optimism that the summit’s outcomes would strengthen ASEAN–Russia relations, enhance regional stability, and open up new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia. By playing a key role in these discussions, Vietnam has positioned itself as a vital contributor to the ongoing dialogue and partnership between ASEAN and Russia, looking towards a future of increased collaboration and mutual benefit.
