The Red Roses must prepare for life without Emily Scarratt after the 35-year-old centre announced her retirement following 119 caps for England. The two-time World Cup winner will remain in rugby, taking on coaching responsibilities at Loughborough Lightning and a mentoring role with the Rugby Football Union.
Scarratt’s 17-year international career established her as one of England’s most valuable players. She contributed to 11 Six Nations title victories and became the only English player to compete in five World Cup tournaments. Her consistency, skill, and leadership made her a cornerstone of every team she represented, from her 2008 debut through to her final appearance at the 2025 World Cup.
The centre’s scoring prowess made her a constant threat to opposing teams. She finishes her career as England’s all-time leading points-scorer with 754, a record that reflects both her longevity and her ability to deliver in crucial moments. She also ranks third all-time in caps and tries for the Red Roses, demonstrating the comprehensive nature of her contributions to the team.
Scarratt’s 2014 World Cup performance remains one of the greatest individual displays in tournament history. She was named player of the final and led all scorers with 70 points as England claimed the championship. This sustained excellence throughout the tournament announced her as a world-class talent. Her later recognition as 2019 World Rugby Player of the Year confirmed her status among the game’s elite.
Beyond the traditional format, Scarratt captained Great Britain to fourth place at the 2016 Rio Olympics in sevens and won a Commonwealth Games bronze with England sevens in 2018. England head coach John Mitchell described her as a once-in-a-generation player whose quality, composure, and leadership set standards for everyone. Scarratt expressed pride in witnessing women’s rugby’s transformation and excitement about continuing her involvement through coaching.
